# 0004: Postgres and a bucket, and nothing else

## Context

Self-hosters judge a project by its `docker-compose.yml`. Every extra service
(Redis, a queue, a search engine, a worker) is another thing to run, upgrade
and page on.

## Decision

The app is one Next.js process, with Postgres and an S3-compatible bucket.
Search is Postgres full-text search with a generated `tsvector` and GIN
indexes. Background work (the sweeper, preview backfill) runs in the same
process on a timer, safe to run on several instances at once.

## Consequences

* A fresh clone runs with `docker compose up` and `pnpm dev`.
* No semantic search. pgvector is the upgrade, when full-text search visibly
  fails on real queries; the benchmarks say where it stands today.
* Rate limits count per process. A shared limiter needs shared state, which
  is the first thing that would bring in Redis.
