# 0011: Elastic License 2.0

> Accepted, v1.2. Replaces 0009.

## Context

[0009](/decisions/0009-agpl-and-ee) chose the AGPLv3 so nobody could resell
the hosting without giving back. The AGPL doesn't stop that: anyone may run
artbucket as a paid service, as long as they publish their changes. The
intent was stronger: free for everyone to use, but not the base of someone
else's SaaS.

## Decision

Everything in this repository is under the
[Elastic License 2.0](https://www.elastic.co/licensing/elastic-license),
except `ee/`, which stays reserved for a separate commercial license and
empty. Anyone may use, copy, change and self-host artbucket, for free, for
any purpose, including inside a company and in commercial work. What the
license forbids is providing it to third parties as a hosted or managed
service. The line between free and `ee/` is unchanged from 0009 and
[0006](/decisions/0006-grants-and-free-sso).

## Consequences

* Artbucket is source-available, not open source by the OSI definition.
* A company running it for its own people, its brands, or the partners and
  contractors it works with is fine; selling access to it as a service is not.
* Changes no longer have to be published.
* Contributions are accepted under the same license.
